  • Money plant cutting can be borrowed from anywhere.

  • Borrowed cuttings of money plants can be used to turn into a full-fledged highly dense money plant.

  • Always take cuttings from healthy money plants.

  • Make sure the chosen branch has at least 3-4 nodes in it.

  • Money plants always grow from nodes or aerial roots not from the leaves.

  • Preferably take 3-4 cuttings of the money plant, so that if one cutting does not work. you can use another one.

  • Do the repotting of the money plant in the evening only.

  • While repotting, the moss stick of the money plant and the roots should not be disturbed.

3. Propagation & Care for Money plant

Yes, money plants can be grown from cuttings as well. Taking cuttings is an easy and effective way to propagate money plants and create new plants for free. Cuttings can be grown in different mediums like water, soil, leca balls, coco peat, sand, etc. Here, two main methods would be discussed.

1. Money plant cuttings in Water: Money plants can be grown from cuttings in water. This is a popular method of propagating money plants, and it's easy to do at home. Follow the below steps:

Take a cutting of healthy money plant.

A stem should have three to four nodes and several leaves.

Cut it just below a node (where a leaf attaches to the stem)

  • Remove the lower leaves, leaving only 2-3 leaves on the top of the stem.

  • Take one bottle (plastic or glass) and fill it with water.

  • Place the cutting inside the bottle. There should be 2-3 aerial roots inside the water.

  • Please make sure that the leaves are not submerged in the water.

  • Roots will start coming in the next 15-20 days.

  • It can be further grown in water also or can be shifted in soil.

  • This method is very easy and cuttings always show fruitful results.

  • It is important to note that the propagating speed in the water can result in longer rooting times and slower growth.

Precautions need to be followed

  • Always take a long branch/stem (at least 6 inches long).

  • Always change the water in the first 24 hours of placing the cutting in the water.

  • After this, you can change the water on a weekly basis.

  • If not changed, it might become smelly and there are chances of insects coming also.

  • If the cutting starts rotting, then take it out from the bottle and clean it.

  • Remove the rotten part and place it again in fresh clean water.

  • Be patient and take care of the cutting throughout the process.

2. Money plant cuttings in the soil:

  • Take the soil of any other plant, which is being used earlier for the growth of any other plant.

Cut the cutting into different parts, each part should have one node

  • Make a hole inside the soil and place the cuttings inside the soil.

  • Make sure the node goes inside the soil. Roots will come out from nodes only.

In this way, place 5-6 cuttings in one pot at a suitable distance.

  • A dense and bushy plant will come out from all these cuttings.

Precautions need to be followed

To get the desired fruitful outcomes certain precautions need to have opted for.

  1. The soil should not be hard, otherwise cutting would not survive.

  2. The soil should not be too wet or swampy.

  3. Add some sand to make the soil porous.

  4. Do not keep it in direct sunlight as there are no roots as of now. Cutting will dry up and might start turning black.

  5. Keep it in bright or indirect sunlight.

  6. Do not give more water. When the top layer of the soil becomes dry, spray some water at that time.

Important note:

  • A money plant never grows from a leave; it always grows from nodes.

  • Unnecessary movement of the plant is not recommended.

  • Let it settle in one place, do not move it here and there too much.

5. Pot size for Money plant

  • Preferably, an 8-10 inch size pot is enough for a money plant but it can be kept in any small pot also.

  • Hanging pots can also be used here.

  • Do not repot them until and unless the roots of the plant start coming out from the pot.

  • Moreover, they show some signals also if there is a need to change the pot.

6. Best soil mixture for Money plant

  • The soil should be well-drained, which means the drainage system of the soil should be very good.

  • If water is given to the plant then the soil should absorb it quickly. Water should not stagnate on the top.

How to make well-drained soil?

  1. Soil: Take whatever soil is available in your area. Sieve it and clean it properly.

  2. Compost: You need to take compost half of the soil you have. Any compost would work like vermicompost, kitchen compost, cow dung compost, leaves compost, or any other.

  3. Coco peat: You need to take coco peat half of the compost you have taken ( half of the quantity of compost).

  4. River Sand: You need to take sand as much as you have taken coco peat (same quantity as coco peat). Note: Sand can be avoided if the soil is sandy.

  5. Neem cake powder and Fungicides like Trichoderma or cinnamon powder can also be added.

  6. Mix all the ingredients properly and this is the perfect soil mixture for “Money Plant”.

  • If you want your money plant to be very dense, then first of all you need to support it.

  • You can use sticks for support like moss sticks, jute sticks, or any other stick covered with cloth.

  • Moss sticks are the most preferred and inexpensive option (easily available at all nurseries).

  • Wrap the branches of the plant across the stick keeping in mind that aerial nodes get directly in touch with sticks.

  • Moss sticks would be fed by fertilizers, different nutrients, water, and all. Hence, all the aerial nodes can absorb all these nutrients and become denser.

  • For small-size pots, bobby pins can be used to give support. Bury the pins in the soil so that aerial roots also get inside the soil.

9. Pruning of Money plant

Pruning should be done at a regular interval of time to get the bushy and dense money plant.

  • Pruning of yellow and damaged leaves is very essential for the healthy growth of money plants.

  • Always use sharp and clean tools for pruning.

  • The more you prune it, the denser it will become.

Important note:

  • It's important not to over-prune your money plant, as this can slow its growth and decrease its overall health.

  • Pruning should be done sparingly and only when necessary.

10. Fertiliser for Money plant

  • Money plants can benefit from occasional fertilization, especially during the growing season (spring to fall).

  • We should give fertilizer to the money plant by changing it every twenty days.

  • Sometimes it can be high NPK, next can be micronutrients.

  • When a money plant is dense, its soil would not be visible clearly. So, a change of soil or adding cocopeat would not be possible at that time. In that case, liquid fertilizer acts as the perfect lubricant for this plant.

  • Different nutrients should be provided at the gap of 20 days.

  • Let’s start with cow dung liquid fertilizer (with high NPK), then seaweed fertilizer after the next 20 days, then it can be mustard cake fertilizer following the same hierarchy of 20 days.

  • Next, it can be Epsom salt followed by neem cake fertilizer, and so on.

  • Always feed your plant with diluted fertilizer having more water and less fertilizer comparatively.

Important note:

  • We should reduce or stop giving fertilizer to our money plant in the winter when growth slows down.

  • Strong liquid fertilizer is not recommended.

  • Over-fertilizing to money plant will lead to yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and other problems.
